Blog Post with A Side of Butter

Last week was a whirlwind since it was the first week of school. I am so behind in blog visits, boo! This next week will be very heavy in terms of work, too. It's just how the school year runs: Come early, stay late.

I did get in a weekend drive, though.

Our first stop was the largest local park. I had an idea that some unusual oaks might be planted in the park, and I was overjoyed to find them growing there! There were three Bur Oaks, and they make huge acorns with frilled tops. Here is a green one:

Burr or Bur Oak acorn growing

When mature, that acorn will fill your cupped palm!

There were some mighty sycamores, too, and you can see the leaves know that it is heading towards autumn. The light under the tree was so peculiar:

I hear some birdies like the seeds, too. They remind me of cattails, with tightly packed fluff and seeds:

I very much want to find a sweetgum here, for those round pointy seedheads they make, but so far, no luck.

I stopped by Holy Cross and ran in (okay, hobbled in) to light some candles. These three are for bloggie frens. I chose the "blue bank" of candles, but there is also a red bank. I go back and forth between the two. It was so lucky to find a "ten" in my purse, as Holy Cross is just $1 per candle, so I had that bank going pretty good.

Stopped by the completely overgrown community garden plot and saw an old friend, fatter than ever! You and me both, buddy.

We went to lunch at Golden Corral. Golden Corral delights me, because it is what I call "home cooked" food. I love seeing the old-time foods that "no one" seems to cook anymore. Heck, America is eating out so much now, with home meals kind of scorned in many households! But where else can you find pan-fried cabbage, fried chicken livers 'n' onions, hamburgers served on buttered toast cut on the diagonal, pea salad, and bread pudding?

I had to take a picture of my husband's plate (below), because I got so tickled, although we felt bad about wasting food. Usually I run and get him a plate, but he wanted to get his own salad this time (and it was the only thing he ate, sadly). He started eating and was griping about the "potato salad" not being any good, and I wondered what he meant, because our Golden Corral doesn't serve potato salad.

Then it dawned on me: He had loaded up his plate with BUTTER, thinking it was the potato salad. Oh boy oh boy! I stuck my roll in the picture to try to make it seem like perhaps it was destined for a roll, but alas, I'm afraid it was just thrown out. But he ate a lump of butter equal to the lump left!

Back home, a pretty lantana bloom was waiting for us as the sun headed down. The lantanas sure took their time blooming this year!

Oh! One dastardly thing that happened this past week and made me a bit down: I found that my cross stitch patterns are being sold (bootleg copies) by some very horrible people who are also stealing hundreds of other patterns, all taken from Etsy. So upsetting. I made one of those "DMCA copyright infringement" claims and presented it to the web hosting service, but who knows if it will work. It is a sophisticated operation that preys on small artists.

Don't forget the Prayer to St. Michael when you encounter evil!

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Well, bloggie frens, I will be popping and hopping over to your blogs this afternoon, and I wish you a blessed week, and strength for any trials and tribulations that come your way. And may they all be small.

Kind regards,

Olde Dame Holly

  1. I got a chuckle out of the potato salad/butter. I do hope his stomach wasn't too upset by it.

  2. Stealing your patterns & selling them!?!! Not good. I hope you can "string 'em up". I had copyright infringement on my photos once and it really made me angry.

Love butter, love potato salad. But, ummm, eating butter by the forkful...no. But, you can tell your husband it was a funny story. Sorry "hubby". Couldn't help myself.
Your buddy is keeping cool in this heat...lovin' the gorgeous lantana. Tell me...what do you do with the seed pods?---for decorating/crafts?

    1. I mainly use the seed pods and any acorns for my nature table. I hope you got the culprit who took your beautiful photos!

  3. I would love to see a Bur Oak and the large acorns they have. Perfect for a Fall display! Oh well, we have Horse Chestnuts which are pretty but inedible.
Sorry about the trouble with your patterns being stolen. I do hope something results from the complaint you made.

    1. Thank you, GM. It took the wind right out of my sails to see the patterns stolen, didn't even finish my new one.

  4. The church candles are beautiful, Holly, and thank you for lighting some for your friends. This really tugged at my heart today, as I am deeply saddened with the news that my nephew passed away last night. Your meal at Golden Corral looks delicious. Have never been there before. Your Lantana bloom is so pretty. I have another dear blog friend who loves this plant. I hear it attracts the butterflies.

Oh, Saint Michael, my beloved Saint, and Yes, I say the Prayer at the end of Mass every Sunday.

Have a lovely week ahead, Holly. Your post made me feel better tonight. : )

    1. What sad news about your nephew! Far too young to pass, from our standpoint, but what joy in Heaven. My condolences to you, Sheri.

    2. Holly, I wanted to ask you if you could light a candle and say a prayer at the shrine in your home for the fires that are going on right now in Calif. Some have been contained, and another is still wildly burning. Thank you, Holly, it means so much to me.

      love ya, ~Sheri

Ugh on the pattern thief. I hope you get some resolution.

  6. Soooo....did you tell your husband of his faux pas? Or just snicker all the way through lunch LOL?? Sounds like something someone else I used to know would do. You really do have a wide variety of trees in your neck of the woods...ones that actually surprise me. There are so few oak left here...disease took so many...but not as many as elm trees....Those ae extinct in these parts. Seeing the candles you light for others is so very comforting to me. Thank you for your unbelievable kindness. I cannot believe those who cheat and steal from those who design their own patterns... I've given up even looking at Pinterest and other search engines...seeing my photos there makes me so angry I could spit...but nothing really to do about it. Copyright infringement, yes...but proving damages is always challenging and the cost of bringing suit against the infringers (even if you can track them down) is not worth the expense or effort. Have a good new week ahead.... ~Robin~

    1. Oh yes, you are so right. It's maddening to see one's creative efforts stolen! And no way to really remedy the situation. I love praying and lighting candles for others. It's a gift that others let me be concerned for them, even on a far-away level. I hope your week is good, too!

  7. Your story reminds me of my father, quietly eating an entire box of candied fruit. Years ago, at Christmas.
I do hope your copyright filing is successful. They also have the Hope of Joanne: May you step off the curb and by hit by a large truck.

  8. Hi, I enjoy your stories.
My lantana is finally blooming too. They sure did take their time this season. Ha!
Thank you for the prayers of Saint Michael.

  9. I’m sorry for your pattern being stolen, I hope you get a solution. Thank you for the candles and the prayer, I did not know it.
The toad is still in the garden!
On my pictures this was not lemongrass, but aquatic plants on one picture and decorative grass on the other.
I hope your week of work won’t be to tiring for you.

    1. Wow, aquatic plants! They were a lovely vertical accent in your beautiful garden and patio area. Yes, the toads are still there! I guess they get enough to eat and I have water for them in a little dish.

  10. Oh dont get me started on pattern thieves. I use to copyright patterns and found out all one has to do is change one thing on it and they can do what they please...so I stopped paying the money to copyright my patterns. I even paid to be on a crat sight, where someone else was selling my pattern as her own...oh this is a sore topic for me. Our church charges $5 for a candle, but they are much bigger. How nice the toad is still there! Janice

    1. I'm so sorry, Janice, that the pattern thieves got to your stuff, too! It's an awful feeling, and worst of all they are selling bad copies. Ugh!

  11. Hmmm, butter salad...might start a new trend. Just kidding. Sorry he got disappointed. I can imagine it would taste funny when he was expecting potato salad! I enjoyed your post and the pictures. Big toad! He looks fat and sassy. I am sorry to hear about your patterns being stolen. Etsy can be a "dangerous place" for business in that way. My son and DIL have an etsy site, and someone else accused them of stealing their designs, when it reality it was the other way around, but Etsy penalized our son's site by removing them for a period of time or something like that. IT was very upsetting when they knew they hadn't done anything wrong and it was the other people trying to steal their business. But after they got back on they recovered quickly and went on to do even better than the others, so God took care of them and blessed them. I hope you can recover your patterns. I am really sorry, but I believe God will also bless you abundantly in spite of those who did wrong. Praying so. Have a blessed week my friend.

  13. To answer your question I will plant tulips ( I will buy them from Netherlands) and all sorts of daffodils.
    Have a nice day.

  14. Your oak is gorgeous and you have loads of trees in your area we don't have here in KS.

They closed our GC and I just learned there is another one in town. I'm a bit scared to eat at a buffet right now, but enjoyed the story of your husband's "potato salad."

I feel so bad for you and the copyright infringement. Theft is theft and should be harshly punished. I hope you get compensation and justification for the theft.

  15. Dear Holly, what a lovely day the two of you must have had--dollop of butter notwithstanding!--Your posting made me realize just how much I miss walking in the 170-year-old cemetery in Stillwater, Minnesota, where I lived for 38 years. The trees there amidst the quietude always brought both peace and contentment to my heart and mind. Peace.

  16. Golden Corral is wonderful! Haven't been to one in decades, because we don't have them here. Home cooking is right! I love that acorn! Your cross-stitch design experience reminds me of years ago (decades again) when I made a hardanger runner and took it to a little touristy shop to sell it on consignment. At the end of the summer they said someone must have stolen it. Either that or they just didn't want to give me my share of the money! Oh well. What can ya do? I love your posts! Keep on looking to God! :)

  17. I love seeing all the different trees and trying to figure out what they are. I DO know what a sweetgum tree is though...and sweetgum balls! heehee! The smooth balls are easier on your feet. Have a good week! Stay cool!

  18. I wanted to thank you for your beautiful comment this morning. It brought a tear to my eye, and I loved it. Yesterday, we had the heat and air guys come in, so I had to be gone all day. I went to the church and talked to the Priest and received Communion, which meant so much to me. Me and my son had ice cream cones and went to lunch and found nice things to do. It was a wonderful day. Take care of yourself, Holly, during these strange times. haha

  20. Thank you, I'm "trying" to work up a kit and have it for immediate sale, it's a slow go. It is unbearably humid and miserable here, good for tomatoes though.Eveything looks very droopy and tired. Including me.

  21. I have been too busy to read blogs for a long time. It is so nice to be back reading your blog! I had to laugh when I read about the "potato salad", sorry to your husband:) It is so interesting to hear about what you see in the nature, I have never seen an acorn like that. So bad that some steal patterns! Thank you for the candles for bloggie friends!

  22. How terrible that someone is stealing your patterns. I did not know that you create cross stitch patterns! I am keeping you and your shop covered in prayer. It sounds like you are in a busy time now that school is in progress? Oh how you made me chuckle when you told us about the butter mistake! Love all of your photos!
